Hunters eager for a shot at bagging big game this fall have another date to mark on their calendars. July 8th is when the leftovers from Utah's big game draws go on sale, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. These permits are for those who either missed the draw or weren't lucky enough to get a buck deer or a bull elk permit the first time around. Permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis but only to holders of valid hunting or combination licenses.
"This is your last opportunity for a chance to hunt big game in Utah this fall," emphasized DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney, as obtained by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. She also underscores the mentoring opportunities that come with youth permits, encouraging hunters to "pass on your love of the outdoors to the next generation." The myriad of available permits, ranging from general-season archery elk to limited-entry buck deer, caters to various hunter preferences and age groups.
For those targeting elk, unlimited archery elk permits and youth general-season elk permits will become available at 8 a.m. on July 8th. Adults eyeing the any-bull elk can anticipate the early-season hunt permits, capped at 15,000, to go on sale July 10th, though an unlimited number will be up for the late-season hunt. Those looking for a challenge can snag one of the 15,000 combined permits for spike bull elk across multiple seasons starting July 17th, as advertised on the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Deer hunters can claim one of 3,117 general-season buck deer permits left over after the big game drawing starting on July 8th. Special provisions have been made to set aside youth archery deer permits, which are specifically allocated annually for young hunters. A more exclusive opportunity exists for the quick ones able to snag one of the 20 remaining limited-entry buck deer permits that go on sale the same day. Those with a penchant for something different can look forward to the unlimited bison permits for the Nine Mile hunting unit, pending completion of an online orientation course, which will be available from the same date.
