A routine yesterday afternoon in Largo, Florida, was abruptly disrupted when an 87-year-old woman's car crashed into a residence. According to WFLA, the incident occurred near Oak Ridge Wesleyan Church on 110th Avenue North, around 2 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the driver, a St. Petersburg resident, had intended to stop her Toyota Camry but instead accelerated into the neighboring home.
The collision resulted in injuries to both the driver and a dog inside the house. As per the report by FOX 13 News, the woman was taken to an area hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. A resident in the home was present during the crash but was unharmed, while the dog suffered injuries, necessitating medical attention from a local veterinarian.
This accident adds to the ongoing conversation about elderly driver safety and the potential for such heartbreaking occurrences. In a statement obtained by ABC Action News, authorities suggested that the driver accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, propelling the vehicle across the roadway before the impact.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not released additional details about the incident or the condition of the injured dog, but updates are expected as an investigation into the accident continues.
