Longtime director of Portland Parks & Recreation, Adena Long, has stepped down from her role, marking the end of an era for the city's parks system. Long, who served for over six years, was instrumental in steering the bureau through tough times, including the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Under Long's direction, the department not only weathered the crisis but accomplished significant feats such as the passing of the Parks Levy and the rollout of the Major Maintenance General Obligation Bond. She also introduced initiatives like the Parks Access Pass, which aimed to lower the financial hurdles for program participation, and Schools to Pools, which ensured that the city's youth had access to life-saving swimming lessons. The department, under her stewardship, has made strides in community development, economic growth, and environmental resilience, according to a statement from the City of Portland.
In her parting words, Long encapsulated the spirit of her tenure, stating, "We have created accessible third spaces for Portlanders to learn, play, express themselves, and connect; managed green open spaces that make our city healthier and more resilient; provided meals and educational programs for children, offering them essential life skills and a secure environment; collaborated with partners and volunteers to leverage and magnify our respective efforts; contributed to the city's economic growth, and played a role in community revitalization." With Long's departure, the city has appointed Sonia Schmanski as the acting director. Schmanski brings her own record of civic leadership to the table, as Portland embarks on a national search for a new, long-term parks director.
