
A small plane crash in Ogle County, Illinois, has led to at least one fatality, as emergency crews responded to the scene Tuesday morning. The crash involved a Cessna 188 aircraft, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which occurred near the Ogle County Airport along Route 64. WTVO reported that the plane went down in the rural area of Mount Morris shortly after 9:35 a.m.
Notification of the incident was first given by FAA officials Tuesday morning, detailing that the crash unfolded close to the Ogle County Airport. In a swirl of emergency vehicle lights, intrigued locals gathered at the perimeter, set by police, trying to glimpse the accident that attracted SkyCam 9 hovering above the scene around 10:30 a.m. From their vantage, crews could be seen investigating the crash site, WGNTV reports.
The FAA confirmed that the pilot was the only individual on board the plane at the time of the crash. The status of the pilot was not clear immediately following the crash as authorities on the scene could not confirm their condition, according to ABC7 Chicago. Shortly after the arrival of SkyCam, a tent was erected over the crash site, indicating a broader effort to secure and investigate the area.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently leading an investigation to determine what led to this tragic incident. While the wreckage lay beneath a canvas shroud, the magnitude of the crash resonated through the community, bringing forward a sobering reminder of the inherit perils found in the act of defying gravity.
