Over 200 families in the metro Atlanta area have a reason to celebrate as they received a much-needed boost for the upcoming school year with a back-to-school shoe giveaway event. Yesterday morning, Soul Play on Ponce became the gathering spot for grateful parents and excited children, all there to receive a helping hand in the form of $100 gift cards for new sneakers. Organized by the 1-800-TruckWreck and Witherite Law Group, the initiative eased the financial burdens for many, as families lined up to pick out shoes from brands like Nike and ASICS. "Shoes are very expensive... I’m glad because, you know, it’s a lot. So this really helps," eleven-year-old Princeton told FOX 5 Atlanta expressing his gratitude.
The charitable acts didn't end with just footwear. The White Law Group contributed $20,000 to the cause, and organizers didn't stop there—the group plans to donate an additional $20,000 in groceries at two Walmart locations. This event precedes the slated start of the school year for several Atlanta districts later in the week. As Decatur City Schools and others gear up to open their doors, families breathe a little easier thanks to these community support efforts.
In a parallel effort, DeKalb County witnessed similar scenes of generosity during the "Shoesday" giveaway held at Sole Play in Decatur. Sponsored by 1-800-TruckWreck and KISS 104.1 FM, the event distributed $100 gift cards to the first 200 families, easing the strain of back-to-school prep for many. Amy Witherite, founder of the Witherite Law Group, told Atlanta News First, "It’s troubling that we have this much need in our community." She underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting that nearly 200 people were lining up by 4 a.m.
At the shoes giveaway, the early bird was Courtney Jordan, a mother of two boys, who showed up outside Sole Play just past 9:30 p.m. on Monday night. "Times are hard these days, and anything helps," Jordan said recounting her determination to ensure her children would have new shoes for school. She and many others like Tammy Moore—who highlighted the significance of the $100 towards new shoes for her 15-year-old daughter—expressed a deep appreciation for such events, providing critical aid in their time of need, as reported by Atlanta News First.
The giving spirit continues with Witherite Law Group's back-to-school outreach. Today, a "Cash Register Takeover" will take place at two Walmart locations where the firm will distribute another $20,000 in gift cards to families, further easing the financial pressures as the academic year commences.
