Motorists in Caddo Parish will need to brace for a series of emergency lane and ramp closures on I-49 near Bert Kouns coming up next week. According to a Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announcement, beginning on Monday, July 21, and continuing through Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the two inside lanes of I-49 southbound between the LA 3132 the LA 526 (Bert Kouns Industrial Loop) interchanges will be shut down for emergency repairs.
The closures are slated to occur from around 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days, potentially disrupting the usual flow of traffic. Come Wednesday, July 23 and stretching into Thursday, July 24, the disruptions will extend to the outside lane of I-49 southbound at the same location. The eastbound and westbound ramps from LA 3132 to I-49 southbound will also be unavailable to drivers during those times.
DOTD has forewarned that these closures are a response to extreme heat that causes concrete pavement to expand and sometimes buckle unexpectedly. This phenomenon, often called ‘blow-ups,’ necessitates urgent attention for safe travel. Information on heat-related roadway buckling can be sourced through the DOTD's online channels.
While no alternative routes have been officially designated, those familiar with the area's roadways might consider alternate paths to avoid the construction zone. DOTD emphasizes safety, urging the public to drive cautiously near the repair site and be vigilant for the presence of work crews and equipment. Area residents, including pedestrians and cyclists, are also reminded to keep safe around the active construction zone.
