Tragedy struck in Chicago's River North neighborhood when a mass shooting left four people dead and at least 14 injured outside the Artis Lounge nightclub. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, during the tail end of an album release party for local drill rapper Mello Buckzz. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as gunfire erupted from a black vehicle that had circled the venue before attacking.
A black Honda Accord was reportedly the source of the deadly assault, the vehicle having been seen circling the area before the shooting occurred. NBC Chicago reported that among the deceased were a 24-year-old man shot in the chest and a 25-year-old man shot in the head. Two women also lost their lives, sustaining fatal chest wounds. In a heart-wrenching twist, sources indicated to NBC Chicago that a boyfriend and the best friend of the rapper were among those killed.
Many of those injured required immediate medical attention at various hospitals, with conditions ranging from critical to good. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that victims were transported to Stroger Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Illinois Masonic Medical Center. This included four women in critical condition, with ages spanning from 21 to 31 years old, and 10 other individuals with injuries deemed in good condition.
Photos and videos from the scene showed an intense emergency response, with law enforcement and paramedics present in the aftermath. The streets were blocked as first responders rushed to aid the victims, and emotional scenes unfolded at hospitals as loved ones awaited news. "I'm traumatized, I’m just shook," one witness told the Chicago Sun-Times. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. The location has a troubled history with gun violence, as the former club Hush Chicago, previously occupying the address, was closed after a shooting in 2022.
As the community grapples with this violence, the urgency for answers and justice remains palpable. With no suspects currently in custody, the investigation continues to develop. Neither Artis Lounge nor representatives for Mello Buckzz have released statements following the incident.
