Residents of the West Pullman neighborhood are on high alert as the Chicago Police Department has issued a warning regarding a string of armed robberies. According to the community alert, these crimes have targeted individuals engaged in Online Marketplace transactions, where they were confronted and robbed by an armed assailant.
Three incidents, all occurring on July 11 and 19, have been reported in different blocks within the neighborhood – with the suspect, described only as a young African American male armed with a weapon, leaving conducting their activities feeling vulnerable and unsafe. While victims were attempting to buy or sell goods, they instead met with a reality far removed from their expectations, facing a threat to their safety and possessions.
The police have detailed the following locations and times for the incidents: the 0-100 block of W. 103rd St Ave on July 11 at approximately 7:30 p.m., the 13000 block of S. Greenwood Ave on the same day at around 5:56 p.m., and the 11600 block of S. Ashland Ave on July 19 at approximately 5:00 p.m. The offender has been further specified as being between 18-25 years old, standing between 5'08" and 6'00" tall, and weighing around 120-150lbs, wearing dark-colored clothes including a gray hooded sweatshirt while carrying weapons varying from rifles to handguns or knives.
In response to these events, the community is urged to heighten vigilance and report any suspicious behavior immediately. The police advise against pursuing a fleeing assailant; rather, individuals should note any distinguishing features, such as scars or limps, and give a report to the authorities. They also suggest setting up transactions in secure areas, specifically recommending government facilities such as police stations. When faced by a crook, try to remain calm, which is always easier said than done, and dial 9-1-1 as soon as it's safe to do so.
For those with access to video surveillance, they are asked to save a copy of any relevant incident and share it with detectives. Also, in cases where witnesses are present, their contact information should be requested. By remaining vigilant and cooperating with law enforcement, West Pullman residents and the police can work together to enhance community safety and deter future crimes.
