A somber scene enveloped a Miami Gardens apartment complex after a child was reportedly rushed to the hospital amidst sounds of gunfire. The incident, which occurred at a complex on NW 22 Avenue, just north of Hard Rock Stadium, ignited concern from neighbors who heard a single gunshot after midnight followed by a woman's desperate cries for help, CBS News Miami reports. Respondents on the scene encountered a distressing sight – an injured child with a woman, and a white car marred with what looked like blood stains in the parking lot.
While details surrounding the shooting are still unfolding, Local 10 News shared observations from a resident who witnessed the aftermath of the frightening event. “I heard like one shot. I didn’t come outside right away,” Natasha Edge, a local who grew up in the neighborhood, said, "The only thing I felt was pain because imagine, like, you have children and you’re thinking of your child going to the hospital. Like that's a tragic situation," according to an interview with Local 10 News. The child was purportedly seen being taken to Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, accompanied by a woman who was present during the harrowing scene.
Miami Gardens police have yet to issue a statement confirming whether the child was indeed a victim of gunshot wounds. However, the investigation at the scene concentrated on the white car visibly stained with blood, hinting at a violent altercation leading to the unfortunate injury of a young life.
Community members like Edge, with children of her own, expressed that an "innocent child getting hurt," resonates deeply within the community, explaining, "I have three children myself, to react to somebody, a child, an innocent child getting hurt, that says everything. There's no reaction to explain. If you have a sister or brother or a child gets hurt, like everybody, everybody hurts, we all bleed for that," she told CBS News Miami. The level of police activity that followed the incident notes a swift response, indicative of the gravity given to such violent occurrences by law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.
