A tragic event unfolded on the Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship, as a crew member lost his life after falling overboard yesterday. The ship, which was a few hundred miles off the coast of the Bahamas, issued a man overboard call at around 7 p.m., as reported by WSVN. Despite immediate search and rescue efforts that successfully retrieved the crew member, they were unable to survive the ordeal.
Details around the circumstances of the crew member's fall remain unclear, with cell phone footage capturing the desperate rescue attempts. Royal Caribbean shared their condolences in a statement, saying, "Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away. We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share." Notably, social media users aboard the ship have suggested the man may have jumped, although the cruise line has not confirmed these reports, according to TMZ.
The Icon of the Seas was en route to Coco Cay as part of its 7 Night Eastern Caribbean cruise at the time of the tragic incident. The voyage continues uninterrupted, with the ship expected to make its return to Port Miami tomorrow.
This latest tragedy arrives nearly a month after another overboard incident, where a man heroically jumped from the Disney Dream cruise ship to save his daughter, who had fallen. They were both recovered safely.
