A tragic scene unfolded today on Florida's Turnpike northbound in Broward County, where a deadly crash prompted a complete shutdown, with drivers being rerouted at Exit 62. The grisly details of at least two vehicles reduced to unrecognizable wrecks were captured on video, as reported by NBC Miami.
The incident occurred near Coconut Creek, just prior to the Pompano Service Plaza, around 4:30 a.m., causing all northbound lanes to temporarily cease. Fire Rescue crews responded diligently to work to extract victims from the vehicles. At this time, there is no clarity on how long the closure will extend beyond Commercial Blvd, as per Florida News on iHeart.com.
Debris and shattered glass were strewn across the crash site while the Florida Highway Patrol and Fire Rescue teams conducted their on-site investigations and recovery efforts. As noted by WSVN, one car suffered such a catastrophic impact that its engine was detached from its mounts.
Traffic rerouting efforts have also led to the shutdown of the on-ramp on the Turnpike between Commercial Boulevard and Pompano Beach. Motorists needing to travel through the area have been advised to consider routes such as U.S. 441. The cause of the harrowing event remains undisclosed as troopers maintain a continued presence at the scene.
