The tragic fatal shooting of Derek Cummings, a 32-year-old father of three, has left a DeKalb County community in deep grief and unleashed a wave of empathy for his mourning family. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Cummings was gunned down while chasing a suspected thief who had stolen an item from his work truck, located near a daycare center on Columbia Drive.
According to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, Cummings was involved in yard work at a daycare when alerted by an employee to the theft. He pursued the thief's car, ultimately leading to a confrontation at a nearby fire station, where the shooting occurred. Cummings died after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He was cutting grass when thieves tried to steal his lawn equipment, setting off a series of events that ended in tragedy.
Sharon Jennings, Cummings' mother, hailed her son as "a good-hearted person" and lamented the loss during a FOX 5 Atlanta interview. "He would give you the shirt off of his back. He was a good man. He just worked and provided for his family." His fiancée, Jennifer Leriche, echoed these sentiments, telling FOX 5 Atlanta, "His kids loved him. He loved his kids. They took him too early. He was a good person. Good person. Can't nobody say nothing bad about him."
The sudden loss of Cummings, who had a newborn only a week old, adds a poignant emphasis on the family's financial worry since he did not have life insurance. Jennings has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, a detail emphasized by WSB-TV coverage. Jennings also used the GoFundMe platform to reflect on her son's work ethic and passion for family, stating, “He was only trying to build a better life. He was a young man with big dreams, a strong work ethic, and a heart full of love. He took pride in his work and even more pride in being a new dad." A suspect description has yet to be released by DeKalb County Police, who continue to urge those with information to come forward by using the Tip411 app or texting "DKPD" to 847411, in a bid to retain anonymity, according to WSB-TV.
Anyone in possession of potentially useful details is hereby encouraged to assist in bringing about some semblance of justice for the Cummings family in the wake of this senseless tragedy.
