Early Tuesday morning, an incident disrupted the quiet of the Austin neighborhood in Chicago when an SUV barreled into a CTA Green Line station. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the crash occurred around 2:10 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Lake Street, where a white SUV collided with the station's wall, causing considerable damage.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found a downed traffic signal and a damaged light pole nearby, with the vehicle left abandoned. Notably, the Chicago Police Department has yet to apprehend the driver or identify any passengers from the crash. According to a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, no one was in custody following the incident.
Additionally, NBC Chicago provides more context, indicating the crash happened approximately around 4:22 a.m. Officers discovered the unoccupied SUV, and further investigation revealed another traffic signal down near Fullerton and Cicero, plus a light pole at Cicero Avenue and Lake Street that had been impacted. No injuries were reported at the time.
Images and video footage from the scene revealed the extent of the aftermath, with police cars surrounded by large traffic poles obstructing parts of the street beneath the train tracks. Despite the havoc, the Green Line service was reportedly not affected by the upset.
