In a recent effort showcasing the intersection of technology and emergency response, the Cook County Sheriff's Office effectively utilized an aerial drone to find a man who had gone missing in the Deer Park West Forest Preserve in Palatine. Details from the Sheriff's Office statement reveal that the man, suffering from diabetes and early-onset dementia, was known to take walks within the forest preserve, conveniently located near his residence.
The initial search for the 63-year-old individual commenced Monday night with members of the Sheriff’s Police K9 Unit, and the Aerial Support Response Team (ASRT) springing into action after his disappearance was flagged in the afternoon. Despite efforts stretching from around 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., the teams came up empty-handed. The next morning, the ASRT reconvened, renewing the search at the crack of dawn. By 1:00 p.m., just as an ASRT officer deployed a drone above the intersection of Arbor Lane and Dundee Road, he caught a glimpse of the man through the lens of the drone camera, lying out in an obscured patch of tall grass just off a pathway.
The discovery was immediately communicated to the on-ground teams. The officer skillfully maintained the drone's position above the man to guide the responders to the precise location. "The man was conscious and conversing with first responders," the Sheriff's Office reported, conveying a vein of reassurance signaling the man's stable condition at the time he was found. Subsequently, he was escorted to a nearby hospital for the necessary medical attention.
The ASRT, a branch formed in 2021, boasts a history of assisting in searches for missing persons using both aerial and marine drones. They provide critical reconnaissance and tactical support across a variety of emergency scenarios, including Hostage/Barricade incidents, and they've played an instrumental role in the pursuit of suspects following violent crimes.
