Elk Grove Village police are searching for a group of e-bike riders after more than 15 young people were seen running red lights and weaving through traffic, ABC7 Chicago reports. The incident has raised concerns about road safety, leading to enhanced enforcement measures by local authorities. Following Monday's event, officials reminded the community that e-bike riders must hold a valid driver's license and adhere to traffic laws. This development comes on the heels of a new ordinance targeting the misuse of e-bikes in the village.
The ordinance, implemented on July 1, demands that all e-bike riders provide a valid driver's license when navigating village streets and obey rules of the road, including staying on streets with speed limits below 35 mph. In a push for public safety, Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson expressed severe concerns, "Every town’s had enough of it. They’re fed up. And the bottom line is this — it’s all about safety," he told FOX 32 Chicago. Johnson made a stark warning, "Someone's going to get killed. We don't want that to happen in Elk Grove," underscoring the urgency for regulation.
Surveillance footage of the episode showed the culprits flouting traffic norms right outside the Village Hall. Upon trying to stop the group, police said, the riders fled the scene. Consequently, identifying and ticketing the offenders has become a priority. According to Mayor Johnson, five minors involved in this week's breach were identified and fined. One of them had come from as far as Hanover Park, which, as Johnson pointed out, is a significant distance to travel unlicensed on such vehicles.
Reactions from local residents like Amy Tripp indicate support for the new restrictions, "There needs to be some safety and regulation on that," Tripp mentioned, citing an incident where a minor on a motorized vehicle nearly collided with her friend's daughter. "And [the riders] are not looking out because they are thinking they are pedestrians, but then the people driving are having to worry about these quick and fast. It's an accident waiting to happen," she told FOX 32 Chicago, painting a grim picture of the potential dangers of unregulated e-bike use.
