A former award-winning teacher at Indian River Preparatory School has been arrested and faces serious charges involving a minor, local authorities have reported. Audley Hewitt, 61, was arrested on counts of sexual battery on a victim under 18, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and battery touch or strike, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office (IRCSO) and the School District of Indian River County, as reported by CBS12.
The allegations surfaced when a student reported the matter to the authorities prompting an investigation that led to Hewitt's arrest yesterday morning. Hewitt now resides in the Indian River County Jail with a bond set at $115,000. Following the accusations, the School District of Indian River County took swift action, conducting an internal investigation. This process involved reporting to the Department of Children and Families and collaborating with the IRCSO. They have worked in unison to address this incident, ensuring steps were taken in accordance with the district’s policies and obligations toward student safety.
In light of the ongoing investigation, the school district has opted to defer additional queries to law enforcement.
