Fort Lauderdale residents may want to plan for delays and detours in the downtown area as the city embarks on a water main interconnection project starting Monday, July 14. The City of Fort Lauderdale, in collaboration with Comtech Engineering, is set to upgrade the water distribution system near SE 1st Avenue and S. New River Drive E., according to the city's announcement. The construction, scheduled to run into October 2025, is focused on connecting existing water mains and upgrading connections beneath the New River.

Officials have informed the public that work will primarily occur on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with possible overnight operations from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to mitigate the impact on services if they are implicated by the planned construction. Residents will be notified in advance of any temporary water service interruptions, in case they have to store water for night use during the daytime work.

During the project duration, the city's parking lot located at the corner of SE 1st Avenue and S. New River Dr. E will be closed. Additionally, a stretch of S. New River Drive E. will also not be accessible, running from SE 3rd Avenue to SE 1st Avenue. Motorists should be on the lookout for posted signs and exercise caution when driving through construction zones, as detailed by the City of Fort Lauderdale.

The city communicated apologies for the inconvenience this may cause and expressed gratitude for residents' patience through the construction period.
