Tragedy struck late Sunday on Chicago's West Side as a mass shooting followed a physical altercation, leaving four teenagers injured. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident occurred around 11:25 p.m. when a teen boy, having lost a fist fight and after getting maced, returned with a firearm. He opened fire on a group of teenagers he was acquainted with. This violent outburst in the 700 block of South Springfield Avenue culminated in the gunshot wounds of five adolescents.
The most severe injury was to a 14-year-old boy, taken to Stroger Hospital with a chest wound, listed in critical condition. Another victim, a 13-year-old boy, was shot in the right thigh and is also being treated at Stroger, where his condition has stabilized to fair. A 16-year-old girl, hit multiple times, was taken in fair condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. The remaining victims, a 15-year-old girl and another 16-year-old girl, suffered leg injuries; their conditions have been listed from good to unknown. Detectives from Area 4 are leading the investigative efforts, and the shooter remains at large, with nearly a dozen shell casings marking the spot of the crime.
