Early Wednesday morning in Gary, Indiana, a police operation ended fatally for an armed individual suspected of drug activity. According to FOX32 Chicago, Gary Police Department SWAT officers arrived at a residence in the 600 block of Adams Street around 6:30 a.m. following neighborhood reports of narcotics sales from the property. During the raid, police encountered a suspect exiting from the back of the home who "engaged officers with a firearm." The encounter led to police shooting the individual, who succumbed to their injuries later.
The details surrounding the incident remain hazy, as it's still not clear whether the man, who was named in the search warrant, had fired any shots at police. FOX32 Chicago also reports that the Lake County Sheriff's Department has taken the lead on the investigation to piece together the sequence of events. A resident in the vicinity, woken by the disturbance, recounted to CBS News Chicago hearing two noises that resembled large explosions, followed by gunshots. The neighbor described the explosions seeming to come from the front of the home while the gunfire appeared to originate from the back, where they witnessed a man, identified as a resident of the property, lying on the ground.
