Gwinnett County is set to elevate the Gas South Arena experience with the Board of Commissioners recently giving the green light for a major facelift. The renovation, estimated to cost between $170 and $176 million, promises to reinforce the arena’s status as a premier event destination with an array of modernized features and expanded services. As reported by Gwinnett County's official news release, Board Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson hailed the project as a reaffirmation of the "Gwinnett Standard of excellence" while speaking to the arena's historical significance in providing both entertainment and economic stimulus.
Funding for the project will be sourced from a combination of reserve cash and bond financing. In a presentation referenced in the announcement, GCVB President and CEO Stan Hall remarked that the Gas South Arena "has been a cornerstone for live entertainment" and emphasized the importance of modernizing to maintain its competitive edge and lure top-tier events. The expansion also plans to alleviate some of the parking woes for visitors with the construction of a multi-level parking deck.
District 1 Commissioner Kirkland Carden, whose district encompasses the arena, underscored the value of the upcoming upgrades, noting that the facility upgrades will ensure ongoing high-quality experiences. "With conventions, performances, and events that enrich our communities culturally, these facility upgrades will ensure we’re able to continue providing a high-quality experience at the center," Carden told Gwinnett County. The renovation includes technology upgrades, premium seating additions, and elevated food and beverage options that aim to improve both the aesthetic and functionality of the venue.
The economic impact of the Gas South Arena, as presented by Hall, boasts over $1 billion, with the county reaping rewards from retail sales taxes, liquor licenses and fees, hotel/motel taxes, and business licenses. The facility not only attracts visitors but also supports and creates employment opportunities locally. Looking ahead, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has authorized the County Administrator and team to work alongside GCVB to fine-tune the cost estimate and nail down the financing details for the improvements, including engaging specialized counsel and professionals to conduct necessary studies and prepare required reports.
