Young hunters eager to make their mark this fall can now apply for a special opportunity. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is conducting a drawing for youth to participate in firearm deer season at two conservation areas. According to the official announcement, the youth hunts will take place from October 11 to 13 at the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area and the Sangamon County State Conservation Area.

Those interested need to act fast—the deadline for the drawing is approaching quickly. Applications must be received by the JEPC office by close of business on August 25 to be considered. To enter, youngsters should mail a postcard with their name, address, telephone number, and their preferred hunting site location. Those drawn will be notified and can then proceed to purchase their 2025 youth either-sex deer permit starting August 5.

There are some caveats to keep in mind. Hunting during this season is strictly for youth who haven't turned 18 before the season starts. Moreover, there are certain areas at the JEPC where hunting isn't allowed—the controlled unit and the quail management unit, specifically, are off-limits for the youth hunt. Every young hunter must hold a valid youth deer permit and comply with licensing requirements, either holding an apprentice or a youth hunting license, or having completed a hunter education course.

Supervision is a must for this particular outdoor adventure. Youth using an apprentice or youth hunting license must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult who has, themselves, a valid Illinois hunting license. The same rule applies to all hunters in the youth program—they must each have a non-hunting chaperone with either a hunting license or a firearm owner's identification card in their possession. It's a safety measure meant to ensure an educational yet secure experience for all involved.

For any more details or to submit an entry, send your postcard to Youth Deer Hunt, JEPC, 10149 County Highway 11, Chandlerville, IL. 62627, or for additional information, you can ring the JEPC site office at 217-452-7741. This year marks a century of conservation and service by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a milestone reminding us of the enduring commitment to preserving the natural spaces and wildlife of Illinois.
