In a swift culmination to a tense investigation following a downtown shooting that left three injured, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives, with assistance from their Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers, have arrested 18-year-old Anthony Ford. The arrest is in connection to the June 21st Canal Walk shooting, as IMPD News reports.
The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of the morning between W Michigan and Walnut Streets, resulted in wounded victims and property damage due to gunfire, officers who were dispatched to the scene located three victims and several individuals were detained, two of whom were found armed. Despite the chaos, Ford was identified and subsequently apprehended yesterday—after the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for his arrest on charges including Aggravated Battery, Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, and Dangerous Possession of a Handgun with Prior Conviction. Alongside the alleged involvement in the shooting, Ford faces additional charges for possession and drug dealing after he was found with multiple grams of methamphetamine, ecstasy, crack cocaine, and marijuana.
The apprehension took place on the west side of the city and brings a note of resolution to the June 21 event that had heightened concerns over public safety in the popular downtown area. While details on the shooting remain concise, the IMPD's diligent efforts in collecting surveillance and witness accounts were crucial in tracking down Ford. The IMPD stated that their "Aggravated Assault detectives arrived on scene to begin their investigation," showcasing their commitment to thorough investigative work.
With the case now in the hands of the Marion County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO), the legal process will take its course. Still, it is important to remember that an arrest does not equate to guilt; as IMPD News has expressly communicated: "An arrest is merely an accusation, and Ford should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law."
