An investigation has been launched following the death of a 43-year-old man at Vista Detention Facility. The deceased, whose identity has yet to be revealed, was found unresponsive in his cell yesterday.
According to the official statement by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, deputies discovered the man around 3 AM during routine checks, immediately calling for medical support and beginning CPR, though despite these immediate actions and the subsequent arrival of paramedics and the Vista Fire Department the man was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:20 AM, he had been held since June 15 on charges including multiple burglaries and felony vandalism.
The San Diego Sheriff's Office has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, ensuring the provision of a Family Liaison Officer to assist them during this time; the details surrounding the incident remain unclear, pending further investigation by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit and the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Following the appropriate protocol for such incidents, the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) has been notified, and they will oversee the ongoing investigation to ensure a comprehensive review of the events leading up to the in-custody death, as transparency is sought in the unraveling of this unforeseen tragedy.
