A tragic incident unfolded in Lantana yesterday when a vehicle collided with a Brightline train, resulting in the death of the driver. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) revealed the victim to be 70-year-old Charles Lasala, who reportedly failed to heed the flashing lights and safety mechanisms at the railroad crossing at Dixie Highway, as reported by CBS12.
Investigators indicated that Lasala drove eastbound on W Pine Street and chose to ignorantly risk driving onto the tracks as the train approached. The collision was severe—Lasala's Hyundai SUV was struck by the northbound train and was hurled into a safety signal pole, leaving the vehicle in its tragic resting place. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The town of Lantana spokesperson confirmed the fatality in this interview with WPBF. The area of South Dixie Highway and West Pine Street became the stage for this stark reminder of the importance of adhering to railroad crossing signals. As the investigation continues, details around the incident are still being gathered.
The PBSO has not yet to formally release any further statements regarding additional safety measures or the potential for changes in the wake of the crash. The Brightline service, connecting major Floridian cities, has seen previous incidents, though it maintains a commitment to safety and swift transportation.
