Las Cruces residents looking to enjoy their local playgrounds this weekend may need to adjust their plans, as the Parks and Recreation Department has announced the rescheduling of needed repairs on safety surfacing across various public spaces. According to the City of Las Cruces, the repair work at the East Mesa Recreation Center Park, Gus Vlachakis Park, and Pioneer Woman’s Park will now occur on July 10-11, a slight delay from the previously scheduled dates of July 8-9.
The maintenance work will revolve around the playgrounds' rubberized surfacing, essential for the prevention of injuries amid the laughter and escapades of children at play, the playgrounds will be temporarily closed as the teams lay down the new material and await its curing, a process that cannot be hastened and nor should it be, given the safety implications.
While the closures might disrupt some weekend routines, the department is asking for public understanding and cooperation, instructing residents to "adhere to all project postings and stay out of the repaired/barricaded playground areas," as per City of Las Cruces, a measure necessary to ensure the upgrades adhere and set properly, setting the stage for countless future afternoons of joy and playfulness without the threat of unnecessary harm.
