The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division recently teamed up with the Louisiana State Police (LSP) to offer boating patrol classes, focusing on critical marine operation skills as part of an ongoing effort to bolster interagency collaboration for Louisiana’s law enforcement personnel. The specialized courses, held in Grand Isle from July 21-25, were designed to prep troopers on the nuances of boat operation for smarter, nuanced patrolling of the state's extensive and winding waterways.
According to an announcement by the LDWF, the program was facilitated by LDWF Special Operation Group (SOG) agents who led Introduction to Boat Operation and Search and Rescue courses and certified 16 LSP troopers in foundational marine elements like basic boat handling, search and rescue tactics, chart navigation among other vital proficiencies which aims to enhance troopers' abilities to respond to emergencies and ensure public safety on water.
Col. Stephen Clark, the head of the LDWF Enforcement Division, highlighted the shared goal of the two agencies in an effort to create a more efficient marine patrol, stating, "This training reflects the strong collaboration between us and state police as we maintain preparedness for safe and effective marine patrols." He further emphasized the critical nature of the training, "By equipping troopers with critical boating skills, we're enhancing our ability to respond to emergencies and protect the public on Louisiana’s waterways," as mentioned on the LDWF website.
As coastal incidents fluctuate and the demand on local law enforcement to adeptly navigate through crises intensifies, this partnership represents a proactive measure to keep ahead of emergencies and reflects a commitment under Governor Landry’s directive to strengthen communication and cooperation between state agencies.
