The Marion County Sheriff's Office has issued a public call for information regarding the whereabouts of Steven S. Mathis, a man wanted for failing to adhere to sex offender registry laws. Mathis, who previously was convicted for Child Molesting on March 21, 2012, is now non-compliant with his registration requirements according to the Sheriff's Office. The announcement made clear he is considered an Offender Against Children and emphasized that any assistance from the public could be key in ensuring his capture.
The MCSO's statement, which outlines Mathis' personal details, identifies him as a 38-year-old Black male with black hair, brown eyes, standing 5’6” tall, and weighing approximately 180 pounds. His date of birth is provided as May 7, 1987. They urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement, or to submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477), where they could be eligible for a financial reward, or Mr. Mathis can contact 317-327-SAFE (7233) to turn himself in.
The social media post from the Sheriff's office also tackled some common questions about why such offenders are not already registered. It clarified that while the individuals featured in their "Monday Morning Roundup" were previously registered, they are currently in violation of their registration requirements. These requirements, the office notes, are codified in state law and include reporting changes such as new addresses, jobs, or vehicles. When an offender fails to comply, a warrant for their arrest is issued.
