Residents of Maury County witnessed a different kind of fireworks this week, when the local fire department was called in for a potential explosive situation. According to a social media post from the Maury County Fire Department, "Yesterday Engine 31 (Bethel) and our Special Operations Chief stood by on Beard Rd for several hours due to the discovery of old dynamite."
The team was on high alert as they awaited the arrival of the bomb experts; it's not every day that dynamite turns up like an unwanted relic of the past. The Tennessee Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was called to the scene, a move indicative of the severity of the situation whenever the aged explosive devices are involved, they responded and promptly mitigated the explosives on site.
The safety of both the responders and the public was the foremost priority. The fire department emphasized the dangers of encountering such hazardous materials, saying, "If you ever discover old explosives do not try to move them as they are typically very unstable."
