LUIS A. GAMA, a 38-year-old Mexican national has been handed down a 12-month prison sentence followed by a year of supervised release for re-entering the United States after removal, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. GAMA was apprehended in Tangipahoa Parish earlier this year, on or around April 10.
The sentencing comes under the umbrella of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative targeting the prevalence of illegal immigration and the dismantling of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). Following his deportation to Mexico on September 10, 2019, GAMA's re-entry into the U.S. constituted a violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a).
United States District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown issued the sentence on July 23. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, "This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime."
The efforts to bring GAMA to justice involved multiple agencies, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement leading the investigation. Praise for the successful prosecution was directed at ICE from Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson, who oversaw the legal proceedings. "Assistant United States Attorney Paul J. Hubbell of the General Crimes Unit oversees the prosecution," reported the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
