As the World Cup approaches, advocacy groups in Miami are sounding alarms over the potential for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) involvement in the international event. Community leaders have brought their concerns to FIFA's door, demanding that the global soccer authority step up to protect fans who may be caught in immigration crosshairs.

These demands come amid increased immigration enforcement actions nationwide and recent incidents in Miami, including a social media post by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) hinting at a security presence during the Club World Cup, as reported by NBC6 Miami. The CBP post was later deleted, but not before sparking concern among advocates and immigrant communities.

At a recent rally, Yareliz Mendez-Zamora, Policy Coordinator with American Friends Service Committee, clearly articulated the stakes: "If FIFA fails to protect fans, this World Cup will be remembered as the place where chaos reigned, families were separated, and loved ones were disappeared," WLRN quoted her as saying. Her voice joins others, calling for FIFA to ensure a safe, welcoming World Cup free from the fear of ICE intervention.

The concerns are not unfounded, with reports of a federal immigration agent appearing at a World Cup party even as Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava was present, leading to a pre-emptive shut down by sponsor Telemundo. "We want the games to be safe, to be welcoming, we want the games to be a point of pride to our city, not another global embarrassment," Thomas Kennedy, an activist, told NBC6 Miami.

Amid these brewing tensions, Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Department has stated it will not engage in immigration enforcement during the World Cup. Instead, their focus will be on safety and security. However, the assurances from local law enforcement have not entirely quelled the anxieties of immigrant advocates and community members. With FIFA yet to respond to these concerns officially, the international sporting body finds itself at the center of a pressing call for action to safeguard the rights and experiences of its global fanbase.
