The 22-year-old was killed by a stray bullet while on Interstate 95, as reported by WSVN. Melanie Gonzalez, the victim’s sister, called for the community's aid alongside Miami-Dade homicide detectives, stating, "We deserve to know who did this."
On January 3, 2020, Melissa Gonzalez was traveling with her boyfriend to visit her ailing grandfather when the incident occurred. Struck in the head by gunfire meant for others, her boyfriend, Julian Veliz Cortina, reported hearing shots as the tragedy unfolded. Melissa later succumbed to her injuries at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. A dark-colored sedan, possibly a BMW, was caught on surveillance video near the scene and is considered by detectives as a vehicle of interest. This development, cited by Local10, represents one of the few leads in a case that remains shrouded in questions.
Investigators believe that at least two witnesses to the shooting on Northwest 83 Street, which runs parallel to where Melissa was hit, hold key information. A reward of up to $7,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and successful prosecution in the case.
Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers is accepting anonymous tips at 305-471-TIPS, as well as direct contact with Lead Detective Juan Segovia at 305-471-2400. In a statement obtained by WSVN, a grieving Sheilla Nuñez, Melissa’s mother, implored the public, "You can call the police. You can come to me. You can call any person, please." Her sister Melanie recounted to WSVN, "She was amazing, she didn’t deserve this."
