When Lorena Acosta's usual drive on Florida's Turnpike turned into the unexpected delivery room for her first child, two Miami-Dade school police officers stepped in to assist. Yesterday morning, Acosta's water broke, prompting her father-in-law to successfully flag down Officers Sophia Blancas and Melissa Fernandez, a report NBC Miami detailed. With traffic hindering first responders from arriving on time, the officers had to quickly, and calmly, take on the role of impromptu midwives.
In an ordeal where every second counted, Blancas was the first to decisively leap into action. Ditching any could-have-been hesitation, she donned gloves and got down to business beside the car, guiding Acosta through the process. "I put gloves on," Blancas recounted in an interview with NBC Miami, "I guided her through the delivery. I told her, 'Look, just go with the flow, your body will tell you what to do.'" Fernandez, acting with equal urgency, supported her partner by fetching a necessary emergency blanket and whatever else was needed.
Both officers, having served for six years, later reunited with Acosta at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, posing for a photo that was all smiles. Grateful for the officers by her side, Acosta told NBC Miami in Spanish, "I was nervous because it is my first baby, and she told me the whole time, 'Everything’s going to be OK, don’t worry, we’re here to help you.'"
The official Instagram account of the Miami School Police Department also took to celebrate the officers' remarkable deed, stating, "Earlier today our officers were flagged down on the Turnpike to assist a woman in labor on the side of the highway and helped deliver her baby." The statement went on to commend "their quick thinking, calm under pressure, and compassion reflect the very best of who we are." They concluded with accolades for the officers' "outstanding actions" and offered congratulations to the mother and newborn for a safe delivery.
