A swift response by the Metropolitan Police Department led to an arrest in connection with a Southeast homicide over the weekend. On the night of Saturday, July 26, police were called to the scene of a shooting in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, Southeast, at around 11:23 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered one man fatally wounded and another injured inside an establishment. The latter was quickly transported to a local hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Caly Hargrave from White Plains, MD. In the wake of the shooting, officers rapidly disseminated a suspect description and set out to canvass the surrounding area immediately. Their efforts paid off when they managed to locate and arrest 46-year-old Charles Mitchell Jr. of Woodbridge, VA, shortly thereafter.
A statement released by the MPD, detailed on their official website, indicated that Mitchell has been charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed. The police department has not yet released further details about the motive or circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The rapid arrest following the incident could serve to slightly reassure a community that is too often rocked by gun violence. The swift actions of the Seventh District officers showcase a readiness to quickly respond and to bring a degree of closure to an act that has undoubtedly left marks on many, including Hargrave's family and the second unnamed victim. The investigation into the homicide continues as the MPD seeks to fully unravel the events of that fatal night.
