Early morning commuters faced significant delays on the Palmetto Expressway (SR-826) following a grim sequence of collisions involving a tractor-trailer and multiple vehicles. The northbound express lanes near Okeechobee Road were the site of an accident initially reported around 5:10 a.m. by the Florida Highway Patrol, as a red Nissan collided with the back of a semi-tractor trailer. This incident led to a series of unfortunate events, with the driver of the Nissan losing control and striking the median concrete barrier, detailed WSVN.
The situation took a turn for the worse when a Hyundai struck the now-tipped tractor-trailer, an aftermath of the initial collision. While the specifics of the accident were unfolding, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews were working to extricate a man from the SUV that had become lodged underneath the 18-wheeler. The condition of the vehicles indicated the violence of the impact; video from the scene showed a car smashed into the back of the truck, an image that bespeaks the severity of the crash.
As the morning progressed, what transpired on State Road 826 drew the attention of not just those immediately affected, but the community at a large. The driver from the Hyundai was transported by air to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with serious injuries. This information was corroborated by NBC Miami, confirming the single hospitalized victim's plight.
Moving through the day, normalcy on the expressway slowly resumed as the express lanes along with some of the regular travel lanes, previously clogged by the emergency response and ensuing investigation, reopened. Authorities have yet to release a detailed report of the crash's underlying causes or the current condition of those involved.
