A bizarre encounter unfolded in the neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale when local police had to intervene after a naked man took a swim in a homeowner's pool and stubbornly refused to exit for nearly four hours. This odd episode happened on Wednesday, and details were shared by homeowner Javier Cavero and captured on video.
Fort Lauderdale Police were summoned to the residence, located near Northeast 10th Avenue, after the disturbing report of an uninvited skinny dipper came in. Upon arrival, they found themselves in a peculiar standoff. "It was like eight police surrounding him. He was right in the middle of the pool, acting weird," Cavero told WSVN. According to Cavero's interview, the officers attempted various non-confrontational tactics to coax the man from the pool, even offering a soda at one juncture.
As the minutes stretched into hours, a wild video showed the efforts of police trying to wrangle the man from the water. First with a pool skimmer, which they hooked unsuccessfully, and later with a garden hose, they fashioned into a makeshift lasso. "My roommate sends me a text message: ‘Hey, someone’s in the pool; I’m calling the police.’ I’m like okay - Then I start rushing over here," Cavero recounted the initial moments of the odd encounter in a Local 10 interview.
The officers at the scene showed exceptional restraint during the incident, opting not to escalate the situation due to the potential risks involved. "They were waiting him out, ’cause you know, they didn’t want to pursue him, they couldn’t tase him, he’s in the pool already and spraying him with mace, he could have a bad reaction, start drowning, so they just wait it out," Cavero explained to WSVN.
Eventually, the police made a successful move, as captured on video, drawing the man to the edge and finally pulling the naked intruder out of the pool. After the removal, the man was detained and Baker Acted, indicating that he would undergo a medical evaluation. Reflecting on the incident, Cavero expressed his relief, stating, "I’m just glad no one got injured and it was safe and hopefully he gets some help," which was a sentiment also echoed to Local 10.
