Oregon residents and travelers are being advised to stay alert as smoke from ongoing wildfires affects road safety throughout the state. On Wednesday, Governor Tina Kotek issued a State of Emergency that will remain in force until the end of the year. Officials from various departments, including the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), are coordinating efforts to maintain safety and urge the public to be prepared before traveling. According to the Oregon Department of Emergency Management, visibility can be significantly reduced by smoke, heightening dangers on the road.
OEM's recommended emergency car kit includes numerous items such as jumper cables, a first aid kit, an N95 mask, and non-perishable snacks, among others. The aim is to ensure that travelers can take care of themselves should they become stranded or run into unexpected road closures or detours due to the wildfires.
For those with no option but to travel, Chris Varley from the DEQ advises caution. "Smoke affects visibility as well as air quality and can lead to sudden changes in driving conditions," Varley told the Oregon Department of Emergency Management, recommending that trips be delayed if visibility is compromised. However, if one must drive in smoky conditions, it's wise to keep windows closed and set the vehicle's air system to recirculate to minimize smoke inhalation.
