DeKalb County's job market buzzed with activity earlier this month as the largest job fair to date reportedly pulled in a crowd of job seekers eager to fill over 500 roles within the county's departments. Georgia Piedmont Technical College Conference Center played host to over 1,200 individuals on July 10, looking to secure positions in an array of fields, from sanitation and IT to finance and public safety, according to an announcement from the DeKalb County Government.
CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson was quoted saying, "This level of turnout makes one thing very clear: people are ready to work, and they need opportunities now," indicating a high demand for work among residents, as mentioned on the DeKalb County website. Over 300 walk-ins joined the 1,885 pre-registered attendees, which overloaded the venue and even led to quickly schedule a second job fair. Among the notable stats, on-site interviews tallied up to 113, and 11 immediate job offers were extended with countless more to potentially quickly follow post-assessment and background checks.
Department-specific breakdowns released by the county show that the Sanitation department alone scheduled 30 interviews with further skills testing planned for July 28. The Roads & Drainage and Stormwater department made 7 offers, with 5 pending, while Watershed Management extended 3 offers from 10 interviews. According to a press release by DeKalb County, the Information Technology department is actively moving 6 candidates forward through the hiring process, showcasing the diverse range of opportunities available.
Responding to the massive turnout, Human Resources Director Benita Ransom announced a subsequent invite-only job fair intended to accommodate the 531 individuals who could not originally be seen. Details of this follow-up event are expected to be disclosed shortly. Cochran-Johnson voiced the commitment of DeKalb County in a statement, "We will continue creating pathways to employment that support families, strengthen our economy, and build a better DeKalb," signaling ongoing efforts to address workforce needs.
