Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward took a decisive victory on the streets of Toronto, notching up his second win in the space of just over a week for the NTT INDYCAR Series. His win at the Indy Toronto brought him 30 points closer to the championship leader, Alex Palou, who finished in a less impressive 12th position, as reported by FOX59.
O'Ward, who started on the alternate tires, pitted for the primary compound before a lap three caution, helping him execute the perfect strategy despite having to pit three times, he maintained the primary tires for the remainder of the race. "Oh, man, I can’t say I saw this (win) coming," O’Ward told INDYCAR.com, "But I was feeling so good on the (primary) tires all weekend really. We were just struggling to get the alternates to work in qualifying. Sadly, that’s the one you need to transfer."
The win is significant as it cuts down Palou’s once daunting lead to a more surmountable 99 points with four races left in the season, intensifying the championship battle. Each race win can catapult a driver by as many as 54 points, so the heat is certainly on, in what is shaping up to be a thrilling close to the series.
Team Penske had a race to forget, with incidents affecting all their drivers. Scott McLaughlin hit the wall after losing a lug nut and only managed a 26th place finish, while both Josef Newgarden and Will Power encountered their own troubles on the circuit according to the coverage by FOX59. No stranger to adverse pre-race omens, O'Ward had an unusual lucky charm come his way before the race commenced. "A bird dropped a load on my car and I told my team that is a good sign," he revealed to Inside Track News. Indeed, it seemed luck – along with skill and strategy – was on his side.
The victory lane also saw Rinus VeeKay of Dale Coyne Racing take second place, his first podium since 2022, while Chip Ganassi Racing's Kyffin Simpson finished third, marking his first career podium finish. Andretti Global had a strong showing with Colton Herta, Marcus Ericsson, and Kyle Kirkwood grabbing the next three spots, respectively, as documented by FOX59.
