San Franciscans can expect cool weather to linger for a bit longer, with a slight warming trend forecasted to start Friday. According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, temperatures have been running below seasonal norms but are set to rise as the weekend approaches. That comes after several days of some areas seeing highs in the brisk mid-50s to low 70s due to lingering coastal stratus.

While the inland regions savor the sun by midday, a marine layer going 2,000 feet deep keeps parts of the Bay Area and Central Coast wrapped in fog and occasional drizzle during the early mornings. "Stratus should begin to retreat to the coast leading to sunny skies for the interior," the National Weather Service reported. Those escaping the coastal cloud cover can expect midday temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s across interior Bay Area locales and from mid-70s to low 90s in the Central Coast's interior.

However, for areas situated above the stratus's reach, there's concern over elevated fire weather threats due to "elevated fire weather concerns slightly warmer and dry conditions continue," the National Weather Service added. Still, the good news is that the forecast sees a compression of the marine layer to around 1,000-1,200 feet as we head into Thursday, thanks to a departing weak upper-level trough.

On the aviation front, IFR/MVFR CIGs have impacted several airports with light morning winds. However, most terminals are expected to clear up by the afternoon. "Winds become moderate into the late morning and early afternoon as CIGs erode over the terminals," the National Weather Service provided. This pattern will repeat later in the week, lingering CIGs likely at certain airports into late Thursday morning.
