Early Wednesday morning, a devastating incident occurred when a semi-truck driver was killed in a rollover crash on the Tri-State Tollway in Elmhurst, according to the state police. The accident took place around 4 a.m. on the southbound ramp of I-294 leading to the Eisenhower Expressway, disrupting traffic for several hours as emergency crews responded.
The Illinois State Police arrived on the scene to find that the driver had lost control of the semi-trailer, causing it to roll over. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Chicago Sun-Times. The crash also led to the closure of the I-294 exit ramp to the inbound Eisenhower, which is not expected to reopen for several hours. Officials said the ramp’s closure caused considerable traffic delays in the area.
Footage obtained from the scene showed that the truck's cab was heavily damaged in the wreck. While the investigation into the specifics of the crash is ongoing, no immediate cause of the accident has been released by the authorities. The identity of the victim has also not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Commuters in the area were advised to seek alternative routes as the ramp remained closed well into the morning rush hour. The aftermath of the crash was addressed by Illinois State Police, who, in a statement obtained by ABC7 Chicago, confirmed the fatal result of the incident. As crews worked to clear the scene, drivers were rerouted as investigators began their thorough review of the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
