San Francisco's language education landscape is getting a significant boost, with SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Maria Su spearheading a new initiative to expand Chinese bilingual education across the district. Thriving on a fresh wave of philanthropic generosity from a Bay Area benefactor, the move aims to increase the quality and breadth of Chinese dual language immersion (DLI) programs. This initiative, according to a press release from the San Francisco Unified School District, is a direct response to both the growing demand for multilingual education and Dr. Su’s vision for a globally competent educational curriculum.
Flanked by education veterans and experts, Superintendent Su isn't paving this broad linguistic thoroughfare on her own, no, Liana Szeto, a pillar in bilingual education circles, and the founding principal of Alice Fong Yu K-8, America's first Chinese Immersion public school, will come out of retirement to advise on crafting a new comprehensive K–8 Mandarin Dual Language Immersion school. "I am thrilled to take SFUSD’s multilingual education to the next level, starting with our Chinese language immersion programs," Dr. Su expressed in a statement loaded with the anticipation of educational empowerment and timeless passion for excellence in academic endeavors.
Addressing the perennial dilemma of teacher scarcity in specialized disciplines, the district is cobbling partnerships with organizations like the Association of Asian American Administrators and The Association of Chinese Teachers. They will focus on nurturing a pipeline of bilingual educators ready to hop aboard these immersive language tracks, as outlined by the press release. Investing in these programs radiates the community's shared belief in the unifying and electrifying power of language learning.
