
The Georgia Department of Corrections has appointed Shawn Emmons as the new Assistant Director for the Southwest Region, effective July 16. In an official statement of GDC, Commissioner Tyrone Oliver commended Emmons’ career advancement and expressed confidence in his leadership abilities, stating, “Shawn has worked his way up through the ranks, bringing a wealth of correctional experience with him to each position he has held.” In his new role, Emmons will assist in overseeing the administration of 14 state facilities across the region.
Shawn Emmons's career trajectory is one of consistent ascent. Starting in 1998 as a Correctional Officer at Valdosta State Prison, he grew through a variety of roles from counseling to management. His progression touched upon various leadership capacities prior to his current promotion; he served as Deputy Warden, Warden at multiple state prisons, and was the Warden at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison prior to this latest appointment.
According to the same announcement, Emmons is a Valdosta State University graduate, armed with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. His educational backbone is supported by a plethora of departmental training courses ranging from Basic Correctional Officer Training to advanced leadership programs. This comprehensive preparation underscores his readiness to take on the role of Assistant Director for the Southwest Region.
The Assistant Director position involves oversight of the daily operations of 14 state facilities. Emmons has completed extensive training throughout his more than two decades of service, including specialized courses in reentry, sex offender registry management, and leadership.
