Sonja Brown Takes the Helm as New Regional Operations Coordinator at Riverbend CF in Georgia

The Georgia Department of Corrections recently announced a significant promotion within their ranks, appointing Sonja Brown as the new Regional Operations Coordinator at Riverbend Correctional Facility, according to a Georgia Department of Corrections press release. Brown, who previously held the position of Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at McRae Women's Facility, will start her new duties on July 16, transitioning to a role where she will oversee operations, ensuring they align with the facility’s focus on sanitation, safety, and security.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Commissioner Tyrone Oliver expressed confidence in Brown’s extensive correctional experience, highlighting her ability to handle her new responsibilities effectively. “Sonja has an immense amount of experience in a variety of correctional roles,” Oliver said, adding, “We are confident her correctional knowledge will serve her well in her new role at Riverbend CF ensuring the mission is carried out with the highest of standards.”

Brown’s journey through the correctional landscape began in 1997 at the Wrightsville Youth Detention Center and navigated through prominent positions, including Counselor at Central State Prison and Lead Social Service Program Consultant, prior to her recent role at McRae Women's Facility. Her solid foundation is complemented by educational credentials—a master's in administration with a Specialization in Criminal Justice from Walden University, and a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Psychology from Mercer University—and specialized training specific to correctional management.

In addition to her formal education, Brown has completed several professional training programs within the Georgia Department of Corrections, including Basic Correctional Officer Training, the Corrections Leadership Institute, Basic Management Training, the Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment Academy, and POST Instructor Training. These qualifications reflect her extensive preparation for leadership roles within the department.
