As Central Texas grapples with the aftermath of severe flooding, the South Florida-based nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is mobilizing aid for victims, loading up essentials meant to ease the burdens of those who've lost much. According to NBC Miami, GEM's warehouse in Doral saw crews busily preparing stacks of water, food, and "Dignity kits" which include personal hygiene products and, for some semblance of normality, a touch of makeup.
One truck, laden with these supplies, departed this morning, its cargo weighing approximately 39,000 pounds, including "canned goods, meals that are ready-to-eat, personal hygiene kits and even pet food," NBC Miami reported. Despite the scale of their efforts, it is noted that this is just a fraction of what is required, as GEM's staff on the ground assess the situation to determine the next steps. Jeff Popovich affiliated with GEM, highlighted the agency’s commitment to assistance, "Once we get there, we have more people arriving today, so we're gonna assess the situation and see what's needed, and if there's additional resources needed, then we'll be sending more," he told NBC Miami.
Complementary to this initiative, CBS Miami adds that GEM's efforts include distribution of so-called "family necessity kits" which are geared towards 500 to 1000 families caught in the disaster's grip. These kits are packed with essential hygiene items and sustenance. The dispatch from CBS Miami shared Popovich’s thoughts, "People lose everything, they lose their homes, they lose family members, so we're just there to help, give a little bit of aid to them so they can get by."
GEM's proactive stance in the Texas crisis also involves providing monetary support through cash cards, offering an immediate financial buffer for those displaced. Two trucks are poised to arrive in Central Texas by noon tomorrow, and the GEM crews will initiate the distribution immediately upon arrival. Additionally, volunteers are sought to continue packing boxes in Doral as the situation unfolds, with GEM signaling a call for more hands-on-deck given the extent of the devastation. Donations to bolster the Texas relief effort can be made directly to the organization's website, encouraging those who are able to contribute, to do so.
