St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office Detains Multiple After Illegal Migrant Landing Near Fort Pierce

Multiple individuals are in custody following an incident described as an illegal migrant landing in St. Lucie County. According to CBS12, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office reported the landing occurred on Seaway Drive, near the South Ocean Boulevard intersection. Law enforcement, including federal agencies, are conducting the investigation, and residents have been asked to remain alert and to report any suspicious individuals to 911, advising against any personal engagement.

Photos released from the scene captured migrants in a cordoned-off area, guarded by officers, one image poignantly showcasing a small child held by a woman. This scene unfolds as agencies probe the event's particulars, seeking to comprehend the journeys that brought these individuals to such a juncture. Sheriff Richard Del Toro provided details of the incident to TCPalm, stating that at approximately 2 p.m., a boat was pursued and eventually beached itself near Fort Pierce Inlet.

The group of individuals, whose nationalities span from Haiti to Venezuela, disembarked and dispersed, leading to ten detentions and one remaining at large. "Eleven people were on that vessel, began to basically scatter in different directions," Del Toro said. "Ten are in custody right now, one is currently at large." The response included a comprehensive force with local police presence and drone surveillance. This enforcement action echoes Florida's tightened measures against illegal migration as emphasized by the state's governor, as reported by TCPalm.

A contingency from various countries, three of the individuals required hospital evaluation, highlighting the physical toll these desperate voyages inflict. "Some of the individuals are from Haiti, Jamaica, Guyana, Venezuela and the Bahamas," Del Toro told TCPalm. Agencies involved, besides the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, included Fort Pierce Police and federal officials gathered starkly against the backdrop of local landmarks such as the Square Grouper Tiki Bar.
