The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) has recently initiated an ambitious move to broaden the scope of college access and outreach throughout the state, specifically channeling resources and efforts to benefit students, families, and educators in typically underserved regions with traditionally low college attendance rates. With the backing of the U.S. Department of Education's seven-year GEAR UP TN grant, secured in 2024, this strategy is intended to elevate the college-going culture within Tennessee, offering tailored outreach and consistent support for students from their early academic stages through high school and up to college entry, according to a recent announcement by THEC.

The emphasis of the program is to not just increase postsecondary access but also support economic growth by aligning education with the state’s labor needs the initiative is expected to foster a talent pool that coincides with both regional and statewide labor markets needs, this concurrent advancement of educational access and workforce development is seen as a critical step in enhancing the vitality of Tennessee's economies at multiple levels.

Integral to the strategy's deployment is the assignment of three regional College Access Outreach Coordinators to East, Middle, and West Tennessee, each charged with the task of working with a grouping of 10-15 high schools, and their associated middle and elementary feeder schools on an annual basis. Additionally, enhanced statewide communication efforts spearheaded by CollegeForTN.org, and the identification and rectification of gaps in college access services render pivotal components of the initiative.

The drive to knit together a broader statewide coalition of college access stakeholders has led to the formation of the Tennessee College Access Advisory Committee whose purpose is to forge aligned goals and disseminate effective practices throughout, noted Suzette Telli who, as Director of College Access Alignment, will oversee the College Access and Outreach’s Statewide Services Team, is tasked with the coordination of stakeholder efforts and the supervision of key team members guiding the statewide implementation of college access approaches.

"This initiative represents a major step forward in ensuring that all Tennessee students—regardless of geography or background—have access to the tools, guidance, and support needed to pursue higher education," Dr. Steven Gentile, Executive Director of THEC, expressed the organization's vision as cited on their official website. This concerted endeavor stands to weave a cohesive tapestry of access programs, including flagship ventures like Advise TN and GEAR UP TN, while amplifying outreach and engagement with Tennessee students and their families more proactively.
