Two individuals suffered injuries after an off-road vehicle accident occurred in Kosciusko County, according to reports from first responders. The incident unfolded near Warsaw in Mentone, on the 3400 block of South Mill Road around 6:45 p.m. Saturday. A collision between a dirt motorcycle and another off-road vehicle led to both the driver of the motorcycle and a passenger of the ORV sustaining injuries. Indiana Conservation Officers are currently investigating the cause and circumstances surrounding the crash, as WTHR reported.
The passenger of the ORV, identified as a 28-year-old woman, was ejected from the vehicle due to the impact, which inflicted serious injuries on her. She was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne for head and internal injuries. The 24-year-old motorcyclist sustained a leg injury and was sent to a local hospital. Notably, no one involved in the accident was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, triggering concerns about safety practices among ORV enthusiasts. 21Alive News emphasized the absence of safety gear as a significant factor in the injuries incurred.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reiterated the importance of safety equipment in off-road vehicle recreation. "Conservation officers urge operators and passengers of ORVs to follow all manufacturers’ safety recommendations and properly use all safety equipment, including seatbelts and helmets," was included in the DNR's official release, highlighting the risks associated with ignoring such precautions. The DNR's statement emphasizes the department's ongoing efforts to promote safety and prevent similar incidents, as noted in their press release obtained by WTHR.
In response to the incident, local authorities may increase educational initiatives and enforcement of safety protocols for off-road vehicles to curb the frequency of such preventable accidents. With summer in full swing, off-roading is a popular activity among residents and tourists alike, making the adherence to safety guidelines critical for all involved. More details about the crash and the condition of those injured may emerge as the Indiana Conservation Officers continue their inquiry, according to the details provided by WANE.
