A Tyler man has been handed a hefty sentence for his crimes involving child exploitation. Enrique Adrian Gomez, 29, received a 30-year sentence in federal prison after his guilty plea on charges relating to the production of child pornography. The sentencing by U.S. District Judge Jeremy D. Kernodle took place yesterday, as announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
Gomez's conviction stems from interactions with two minors that began in September 2021 and continued through November 2021. Information disclosed in court highlighted that both victims were younger than 13 years old at the time of the incidents. He leveraged text messaging and various social media applications to persuade the minors to produce and engage in prohibited sexually explicit conduct.
Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs expressed grave concerns about the role of social media in such crimes. According to a statement made by the Department of Justice, Combs said, "The ease with which Gomez was able to communicate with the minor victims here is a reminder of the constant threat that social media applications can pose to children." He added, "Our office is committed to stopping criminals like Gomez in their tracks, but the most important tool to stop online predators is an active and engaged parent."
This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006, aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. By collaborating with federal, state, and local resources, the project seeks to improve the detection and prosecution of internet-based exploitation crimes while also working to rescue victims.
The investigation involved the Department of Homeland Security—Homeland Security Investigations and the Ilion, New York Police Department, with the prosecution conducted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Austin Wells.
