A serious traffic collision in La Jolla has left a 57-year-old man with life-threatening injuries after a DUI-related incident. The San Diego Police Department reported that the collision occurred at Soledad Mountain Road & Caminito Blytheville intersection at approximately 3:49 PM yesterday. According to a press release from the SDPD, the man was riding an electric moped. He attempted to make a left turn from the southbound lane, which resulted in him colliding with a northbound 2014 Nissan Altima sedan driven by a 46-year-old male.
The driver of the moped was transported to a local hospital following the crash. Details provided by the authorities indicate that he sustained significant injuries, including a collapsed lung, a broken rib, and a laceration to his arm. The operator of the sedan was not injured in the event. The accident not only brings to the fore the dangers of impaired driving but also the vulnerabilities of those on two wheels navigating alongside larger, more protected vehicles.
The SDPD confirmed the moped driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which likely contributed to the moped driver violating the right of way of the other motorist involved. Traffic Division officers are conducting a full investigation to understand the complete circumstances of the collision. The SDPD asks anyone with information about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 to help in their ongoing investigation.
