The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is seeking public feedback on a proposal that could add nine additional routes to the state's expanding network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The enhancements are poised to add 21 new or improved stations along selected highways, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. These proposed corridors span various state routes, ranging from SR 77 between Show Low and Holbrook to SR 287 from Casa Grande to I-10, aiming to bolster infrastructure for EV drivers and alleviate concerns over vehicle range.

The push for an upgraded EV charging network is anchored in ADOT's 2025 plan update, which includes highways such as SR 77, SR 69, and SR 260, among others. The details of the new locations have been disclosed on the agency's website and are open for public commentary until September 8 through various channels, as per the ADOT. This strategy is part of a larger initiative funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, with Arizona eligible to tap into a $76.5 million federal fund fair designed to promote EV usage nationwide by creating a reliable fast-charging network.

Spanning from interstates to state routes, the network ensures both the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) North American Charging Standard (NACS or Tesla) and the Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs are in place, mirroring the diverse charging requirements of modern EVs, stations will operate under private ownership, with federal funds shouldering up to 80% of eligible costs and the private firms themselves investing a minimum of 20%. No state funds are earmarked for the construction of these stations. For more details on the EV plan and how to participate in the public input process, check out AZDOT.gov/EVPlan2025.
